Monday, 4 September – Beaver Lake, AR

Up early, this is a travelling day but have time for a load of washing first.  We head south then west and cross the state line into Arkansas.  Landscape is green and hilly and some parts make us feel we are driving the Rimutakas!

We drive through the Eureka Springs area, which seems to be an outdoor fun destination with a feeling of the Swiss Alps.  We have googled an ACE (Army Corps of Engineers) campground at Beaver Dam – and it’s an island connected by a causeway.  It is stunning!

We are the red dot on the island peninsula.  Looks like the Sounds!
Being the last day of a long weekend and end to summer for most Americans, there are a few sites vacant but we see a couple of awesome ones where the people are leaving today.  So we pick up any old site for now, fill up with water, connect the power to run the AC and lax outside in the shade while we wait for the awesome sites to be vacated. We can tell which ones are becoming free as each site has a card on the post saying when the customer arrived and when they are leaving.  A lot are heading off today. Begone!

Causeway to the island - Dam Site Lake Campground, Beaver Lake, Arkansas
About 5.30 pm one of the good ones becomes free so we snaffle it, even if it did take a bit of jiggery pokery to get into it.  The view is amazing, the water laps up to our front door and we have 50 amp, a concrete picnic table and a fire/grill.  Now we are waiting for the Ranger to come and collect some money from us.  But first, I need a swim, it is 35C hot and sunny!

Our campsite right on the lake - heaven!
The lake is obviously high, some of the picnic tables have a built in foot cooling feature!
