Monday, 5 June – Cherokee Landing, Saulsbury/Middleton, TN

No rain this morning, just partly cloudy and already 25C at 6.20 am -  yep up early, couldn’t sleep any more this night!  Camp WIFI is super fast at this time of day though : )  And there are already heaps of campers coming and going.

There was quite a bad storm here in Memphis last week,  power is still off in some suburbs and the cleaning up is still under way. The streets are littered with sodden furniture and bedding bring thrown out. We did pass a house which had a huge, I mean huge, tree fallen across it’s roof, a team of workmen were trying to clear it up as we drove by.

Area prone to flooding, note the very high power metre at Tom Sawyer Campground
The Pyramid - biggest BassPro shop in the world!
Our drive today is only 90 miles, only about an hour and a half on the road so we decide to take scenic highway 57 rather than go interstate and main highway, but this meant driving through the middle of Memphis which was actually OK, just lots of sets of lights.  Memphis seems to me to be another dirty old town, shabby and rundown.

Close to the city centre the houses are old, built of brick or stone, no wood to be seen. Once we got a bit further out of the city limits the house quality improved and once into the countryside saw lots of truly beautiful old and new homesteads on lifestyle blocks with perfectly manicured lawns.  Then after a while, in the middle of nowhere we came across the National Bird Dog Museum, honestly these Americans make a museum anywhere of anything they feel like.

Starting to see corn crops, this farm was pretty
We got to Cherokee Landing at 1 pm and the sun is out and it’s 27 C.  We set up camp and I am off to the pool, Kim will follow when he finishes working on the water inlet plumbing, it may - or may not be leaking into the fresh water tank, which makes it overflow sometimes!

The camp is 250 acres, nestled in the woods and surrounds a fishing lake, deer have been roaming and fire flies glowing, plus unexplained rustling in the bush!  The campsites are a little ‘rustic‘ but we can see the water and we seem to have the whole place pretty much to ourselves!

Get back from the pool in time for HH but it is a short one as everyone is hungry and I for one need to catch up on some sleep tonight.

HH taken from drone (drone doesn't mind that it is not in the photo!)
Picked a great camping spot.
Other news of note:  My name is Kim and it has been 28 days since I have been in this country and I have had no MacDonalds food!!  Let’s see how long he can make this regime last!
