Tuesday 4 July - South 40 Campground, Petersburg, VA

Happy 4th July everyone!  It’s a little overcast this morning, but still 29 C.  I’m going on a bike ride to check out my new gears which Kim fixed for me - thanks hon!  There are quite a few permanents at this campground, but they are all together in the back and side areas by the pond.

I saw at least five campers that had motorbikes as a mode of transport and we have seen some bikes come and go.  There was an old Safari motorhome back there too with dolphins painted on the back.  There is a boat hire shed but I don’t think the boats have been hired out for a while - $5 per hour for a paddle boat.

Came across a couple of hiking trails, this one had a warning:

Do they poop in the woods??
I started riding up it for a while but decided it’s not really suitable for biking, walking would be better.  I will take Kim with me, just in case there is a bear!

Anyway he is busy playing with the drone!  He chased me up the driveway with it but then it gave a haircut to some trees!  All OK though : )  He's now adjusted the proximity alarm thingy to look upwards as well.

Spent a couple of hours at the pool this afternoon and after about 30 minutes once the big family left, we scored the two loungers, yay!  Had it all to ourselves for another half hour then another family came, they were really friendly too. It was very hot, thunder clouds were building and we heard some distant thunder so time to leave before the rain comes.  An hour later there were a few splashes of rain, about a dozen, didn’t come to anything but it did cool down so it was very pleasant to sit outside under the awning and do some more reading.

See the two loungers at the end, they were the hot property!!
Our plan for dinner was to pop next door to the restaurant, it should open at 6pm.  There were definitely people there earlier today but nobody home at dinner time, dammit! Oh well, the fall back was rather disappointing toasted sammies (not what I was looking forward to) and slightly less disappointing apple cobbler (that was also today's dessert special on the restaurant menu board).  Maybe we'll go for breakfast before we head off tomorrow.

Apart from some fireworks we could hear but not see there was no 4th July celebrations here.  Glad we were able to enjoy the early festivities last Saturday night.

  1. Don't take the bear warnings lightly. We had an item on our news the other day about a teenage boy who was mauled by a bear (taking a run after winning a race, so he wasn't slow)and died before anyone could get to him, and another where a young girl was mauled. Not pretty. They showed us signs on the trail and it looked exactly like that one you took a photo of. And this is no joke. I'm sure if it been the actual sign you would have heard about it or would have been warned but....just in case....
