Sunday, 2 July - South 40 Campground, Petersburg, VA

We had a brilliant Saturday night out on the Lake with Sandra and Lynwood and their son Spencer and wife Jenn, on their pontoon boat watching the 4th July fireworks. Have to say the display rivalled Wellington Harbour’s efforts.  The lake was so pretty, super calm, except for wakes from the hundreds of other boats, the lights at the lake edge from all the beautiful lake houses were low down and there were no city lights so the brilliance of the fireworks was undiminished.

The display was run from the local fire station.  The bridge crossing the river and road leading to it were lined both sides with hundreds of cars, it took them some time to leave, we could still see the car lights when we turned into the arm of the dam our camp is on.  When we got back about 10.45 pm, the shindig in the pavilion was still in full swing, the place was humming and the DJ's music was really good.  S&L dropped us back in the golfcart at our temporary home in the overflow area, saved us a long walk both ways!  A fabulous night and lovely people!

Happy 4th July!

The dark line on the shoreline is the road before the bridge where the cars are parked waiting!
Hard core fireworks are not available for sale here in NC, but they are in SC so it seems a lot of people go south to purchase them.  Sparklers and small ones (less than four feet high) are available here.

Had a peaceful night, just a bit of traffic noise as we are parked right next to the little country road.

We took our time getting up, showered, packed up and on the road.  First stop is Walmart, Roanoke Rapids.  As well as groceries we bought a new mat for inside which I’ve been trying to do for ages.  It was only 11.40am when we hit the checkout and we had wine on the conveyor and we were politely reminded that “you can’t buy alcohol before noon on a Sunday here in the US”.  A bit backwards I think but potentially a good idea? We went back to the coach and unpacked the food, loaded up the fridge and I still had 5 minutes to kill in Dollar Tree before I went back to Walmart to pick up the wine.  Just as well ‘cos Kim left our new mat in there too!

After crossing the state line to Virginia we pulled into the Visitors Centre and picked up some info on the beach areas here in VA so we can plan our next moves.

Arrived at South Forty Campground, Petersburg VA 23805 and Matt, the Camp Host, checked us into site A9.  It’s 33 C outside so AC is the priority.  Plus we have Cable and supposed to have WIFI but I think we are just too far away from the office to pick it up well enough.  I get started on the laundry, sheets and towels etc. over in the camp laundry plus another load of clothes in our own washer.  Kim comes over and gets perfect WIFI in the office/laundry area, so we may ask to move sites tomorrow, we’ll see.  Oh, and best of all there is a restaurant at the campground entrance which appears to be open all waking hours so we will def give that a try while we are here.

By 4 pm a layer of high cloud is taking most of the sting out of the sun but it is still humid - the pool is being very well patronised!  Not sure if people are taking their own chairs there, but there seems to be just two folding loungers and half a dozen red camp chairs for everyone. The pool is just two rows of campers behind us, nice and handy.

Bought chicken thighs today so made our yummy creamy parmesan chicken and sundried tomato for dinner - mm mm!
