Agreed to meet at 9.30 to head to the Rusk Depot catch our 10am vintage train on
the Historic Texas State Railroad for a 50 mile, four hour round trip to Palestine
TX. Construction on this rail system began in 1881 by
prisoners from the East Texas Penitentiary.
In 1909 the final ties were laid connecting Rusk with Palestine. The operation has very recently been taken
over by new owners and the two depots are currently being refurbished. We were comfortably transported in an early 1900's first
class coach, with aircon (today it’s 33C with 95% humidity), sitting at tables
with white cloths and an attentive attendant bringing us coffee and cold drinks. Glad we had first class tickets, no aircon elsewhere on the train.

We
ordered a box lunch to take with us, chicken salad sandwich with the lettuce, tomato and pickle
packed separately so the bun didn’t go soggy - chippies, chocolate brownie and
water. Not bad for $10.
Deconstructed lunch! |
