Sunday, 6 August to Muskallonge Lake SP, Newberry MI 49868

It was cold last night and this morning!  Got on the road around 10ish and it is still only 18C.  We fuel up ourselves, the fridge/pantry and the coach before leaving Sault Ste Marie and then we are on our way - today is being dedicated to sightseeing along the way, ie the journey, not the destination.

First stop is the beach at Naomikong Point, it’s cool with the onshore breeze and there is nobody around.  Then we drive through the little town of Paradise, didn’t really look like Paradise to me although it was a small town on the shores of Lake Superior, I suppose it could be Paradise.  Next we pull of at the lower Tahquamenon Falls.  There are row boats you can hire to see the falls up close and personal.  State Park camping is available here but it is super busy, people everywhere, perhaps because it is Sunday and the sun is shining.

Lower Tahquamenon Falls
Just four more miles further along are the Upper Falls, much more impressive!.  The amber colour is caused by tannin leached from Cedar, Spruce and Hemlock in the swamps drained by the river.  Record flow on the Tahquamenon River was measured at 52,228 gallons per second, back in May 1960 (spring).

Civilised to have a brewery in a State Park!
We arrive at Muskallonge Lake State Park and site 137 is recommended, not much choice of suitable sites to suit our ‘gargantuan’ size!  Maybe we should buy a tent or a truck and trailer if we want to keep doing these state parks.

Fog has rolled in off the lake and temperature has dropped a couple of degrees C from when we arrived at 4pm.  The camp is situated between the shores of Lake Superior and Muskallonge Lake, we will go for an explore tomorrow.  The park used to be a lumber town, US Coast Guard lifesaving station and an Indian encampment!  There are several ORV trailheads around so we see lots of dirt bikes and ATV’s here.  Every January the annual Country Sled Dog Race is held here.  The fishing is apparently another big drawcard.

The local fudge is not too bad, if you like creamy fudges.  Personally I like the grainy sugary, non bendy fudge, like Mum used to make!
