Monday, 7 August - Muskallonge Lake State Park

Muskallonge Lake, all 785 acres of it, was named after the largest predatory fish in the Great Lakes.  It’s an ugly fish too!

We took our bikes our the camp entrance and across the main road to Lake Superior where we were surprised to see a couple of ole timers panning for gold with a purpose built and patented dredge, Harry designed these and he’s sold 1,400 so far.

Real Gold!!  A ways to go to fill the 1 oz bottle to earn US$1,200
Lake Superior is also known Gitche Gumee Lake, made famous by Longfellow’s ‘Songs of Hiawatha’ - “By the shores of Gitche Gumee, by the shining Big-Sea-Water”

Lake Superior also features in Gordon Lightfoot's famous song “The Edmund Fitzgerald”, wrecked in November 1975 with the tragic loss of 29 men, this is the most famous and mysterious of the 6,000 odd ships lost on the Great Lakes. The song also mentions Gitche Gumee and lots of other landmarks around here which we have come across.

Agate hunting is popular here and Lake Superior agate is considered one of the best due to the distinctive banding and rich colours.  I am not really sure what to look for, but regardless we see lots of pretty stones, some of which we are told are granite.  The water is super clear and cold.

Super clear water in Lake Superior
We also had a look around the camp ground, here is the weather for today and tomorrow.
